Theon's Components

Postby Lakeside » Mon Dec 02, 2013 9:51 am

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to offer some thoughts on this response to Theon's Components for Homer Week 3. (The student is a seventh grader.)

Person: the wind, the sun, and the traveller
Action: bickering, walking, proposing, blowing, shining, and removing
Place: a road, the sky
Time: during the day, in the past
Manner: craftily, forcefully
Cause: pride

This is new to both of us, so any help would be appreciated!

All of them look good except for cause. 'Pride' is too vague. It is also a bit of a judgment.

Cause is why, and you did answer that, but pride is so broad it doesn't really answer the question adequately. The sun and the wind are arguing, both want to be seen as stronger, they get into a competition as to who can get the man to take his coat off. The reason for their argument is 'most specifically' (and without value judgment) is that they are in competition. You cannot be sure whether it is a joke and they are friends in a friendly spat, or precisely why they get into their little spat. All you see is what the story offers, and the point of the story is not to avoid pride, but rather that the sun's manner of getting the man to take his coat off is that he does it willingly, whereas the wind's way is to try to force it off... so the point is that it i s better to get people to do things willingly than not.
