Chreia Writing Project 3

If anyone would be willing to give feedback on this I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

Sparta's Boundaries

A Laconian, on being asked were Spart's boundaries were, showed his spear.

It is wise to praise the Lacaonians for their actions. They valued good health and physical strnecth, for each man would become a soldier. This is what one of their number did to show Sparta's boundaries.

This Laconian defined Sparta in his action, showing it to be a military state that defended the land it had claimed, not merely a geographical area.

A person asked a Laconian where Sparta's boundaries were. Laconians were taught to speak as little as possible, so he showed the boundaries by showing his spear. This showed that Sparta claimes what she can defend.

If, on the other hand, someone claimed everything, he would neither own it not be able to defend it. For this reason, the Laconian did not point out Sparta's geographical boundaries. Instead he showed his spear, showing that Sparta claims what she can defend.

Just as Sparta claimes only what she can defend, so also should people not take more food then they can eat. The food that is not eaten is waster, and the land that is not defended is captured.

For example, when settlers came to America, they took the Indian's land. If the Indians retreated, the settlers took more land. If the Indians resisted, the Americans drove them out by force. There were not enough Indians to successfully resist the Americans, and they were not as well armed.

Benjamin Frankline has agreed with this by saying, "Well done is better than well said."

After observing all these points, let everyone admire the Laconian for his wise actions.

Well done, and very much written in the spirit of the ancient model.
