Students going into 1st and 2nd grade

In general, we recommend that 1st and 2nd graders do not start CW yet.

1st and 2nd graders should be doing

beginning dictation
spelling work
basic reading and phonics work

in preparation for going into CW in 3rd or 4th grade.

Unusually gifted 2nd graders may be able to start CW in 2nd grade, but only if they in addition to having the prerequisites mentioned in the 3rd and 4th grade post are comfortably able to do the pencil or computer skills on their own. If they are not able to do their own writing, work on the mechanics of writing first.

Keep in mind that the mechanics of writing (pencil or computer typing) has to do with maturity and development of fine motor skills, which tend to come later in boys, and sometimes are not fully matured to endure longer copywork till 5th grade. Do a little every day to build up endurance and skill.

**We always recommend teaching to the student's weaker skills before forging ahead in the stronger skill areas.**

We discourage "pushing" students ahead faster in the CW series. Our program is already challenging, and we have seen much student burn out in 7th -8th grade from a well-meaning attempt to move through the early grades too fast. It may seem that a student can handle the material in the early grades, but often lack of sufficient amount of drill in the concepts taught do not enable the students to truly master the early material well enough to retain it for later use.
